The teacher behind Shakuntala Yogshala.
A yoga teacher who went looking for the science, and a scientist's question answered by the tradition.
It started in my own body
Hi, I am Divya. Before I became a teacher, I spent years struggling with chronic stress, constant overwhelm, and feeling disconnected from my own body. I tried to think my way out of it, reading every self-help book and trying to force myself to 'just relax,' but the tension always returned. My body was stuck in a state of high alert, and I didn't know how to show it that it was safe to stand down.
It was only when I stopped focusing solely on the mind and began working directly with my physiology that everything shifted. Retraining my nervous system through somatic practices and classical yoga didn't just give me temporary relief—it gave me my life back.
The search
I went looking for answers in the tradition I already loved. Yoga gave me the practices, but I wanted to understand the science behind them. This led me to study the physiology of stress, trauma-informed somatic work, and Polyvagal theory. I spent over 10 years practicing and teaching, learning how the body stores stress and how it can be guided back to safety through gentle, structured daily habits.
The bridge I teach from
Most nervous system educators have never sat with the breath the way a yogi has. Most yoga teachers have never studied the physiology of safety. I decided to stand in the middle. Shakuntala Yogshala is that middle: ancient practice, modern understanding, zero mysticism where clarity will do, and full reverence where the tradition has earned it.
Why the name Shakuntala
Shakuntala Yogshala is named in honor of my mother, Shakuntala. She was the one who first taught me that true strength is not about forcing or fighting, but is rooted in gentleness, patience, and creating a space of absolute safety. Her spirit guides everything we do here: helping you come back to safe.
